Exam Policies
- Offline Proctoring: The exam can be taken at authorized Prometric test centers.
- Online Proctoring: Online testing is available through FINRA’s approved online testing process, subject to eligibility and scheduling availability.
- Waiting Period: Candidates who fail the exam must generally wait 30 calendar days after the first and second failed attempts. After the third failed attempt and later attempts, a 180-calendar-day waiting period applies.
- Retake Fee: Full exam fee must be paid for each retake. A new enrollment is required for another attempt.
Certification Validity and Renewal
- Validity: The SIE exam result is valid for 4 years. Passing the SIE alone does not qualify an individual for FINRA registration or securities business activities.
- Renewal Options: Validity can be maintained beyond four years by obtaining a registration that uses the SIE as a qualifying exam. Candidates must also pass an appropriate representative-level qualification exam for the securities business they will perform.

Prerequisites
There are no formal education or firm sponsorship prerequisites for taking the SIE exam. The exam is open to anyone aged 18 or older, including students, career changers, and prospective securities industry candidates.
However, to become registered to conduct securities business, candidates must also:
- Become associated with a FINRA member firm
- Pass a representative-level qualification exam, such as Series 6, Series 7, Series 57, Series 79, Series 82, Series 86/87, or Series 99
- Meet any additional regulatory, firm, or state requirements
